The 1990s - “Curry’s Sick, Man”
This 1993 cartoon shows racist British attitudes towards Indian food: a cheap, late-night, hangover cure. We have a ‘respectable’ English couple insulting the Indian race and cuisine. We don’t know whether the former vindaloo is sick or a turd. Vomit implies Indian food is not fit to eat, whilst excrement suggests a skin colour slur. The restaurant is also in Covent Garden, which associates Indian food with an area famed for its nightclubs, sex scene and seedy nightlife. These types of ‘comedic’ cartoons were everywhere in the 1990s, promoting racial stereotypes. Indian food became a British favourite, partly because of widespread racist attitudes. As an Indian, the way my culinary culture was seen by the British, makes me ‘sick’!
