“Would Sir like a Curry with his Beers?”

Rowan Atkinson - aka Mr Bean - shows the reality of some British customers in Indian restaurants during the 1980-90s. Large groups of drunk men staggered into eateries after clubs or sports games. They competed to see who could eat the hottest curry, whilst abusing staff, irritating other customers, and making racist jokes like the one about Indian kebabs resembling ‘turds’ – hmmn, seems like a common theme. The British love of curry seemingly stems from racist attitudes and stereotypes, not cultural acceptance. Did these British people act like this in Bella Italia or Thai Square? Were they only rude to Indians, and if so, why?
