Contact Me (Potential Mother-in-laws Contact my Grandma for my Bio-Data)
Thank you for looking at my online exhibition. I hope you’ve learned more about racist attitudes towards Indian food in Britain. With any luck, you weren’t bored, offended or outraged by my light-hearted, relatable, and thought-provoking take on an important topic.
If you have answers to my questions on the opening page, any additional queries, or want to talk in more detail about the exhibition, I’d love to hear from you! Also get in touch, even if you need a recommendation for good Indian restaurant.
The Myth Behind A. K. Shah
If you haven’t guessed, I’m a first-generation Jain/Muslim Gujarati Indian immigrant – Yes Mrs Popat, inter-faith Indian marriages are successful despite the race riots and your outdated personal beliefs. My grandparents settled in Indian communities in Leicester (Jain) and Preston (Muslim) during the 1960s, and my parents moved to London in the 1990s. Instead of becoming a doctor or an engineer, I courageously chose to become the family disappointment by studying a history degree. As part of my final year at Warwick University – Yes Uncle, it’s the one near Coventry - I was tasked with creating a public history exhibition. Indian food has always been a huge part of my life - also I’d just made chai and pakoras - so I thought, why don’t I provide my interpretation upon a hotly debated but rather unexplored topic.
